Executive Building Smokes Up

Backed-up fireplace to blame

Perhaps it's time to make a few repairs at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, formerly known as the Old Executive Office Building...

On Sunday, just before 12:30 p.m., DC Firefighters responded to a report of smoke clouding one of the floors there.  Once on the scene, responding units extinguished a fire in a second floor fireplace.  Officials believe the smoke was due to a backed-up fireplace.

The Secret Service evacuated the building as a precaution.  There were no reported injuries.

The last major fire at the Old Executive Office happened on December 19, 2007, when an electrical blaze damaged much of then-Vice President Dick Cheney's ceremonial office.

The Old Executive Office Building is across the street from the White House
