Sleep Doctors Share Plan to Change Va. Schools Start Time

A team of sleep specialists will share a progress report Monday on their plan to change high school start times at Fairfax County Public Schools.

Last April, the doctors began brainstorming with parents and school officials about how best to move the high school start time to 8 a.m. or later. Nearly all county public schools currently start at 7:20 a.m.

The team has looked at crash rates, depression and school performance. A number of town halls and community meetings have been held to get input from parents and students.

The doctors believe the change is possible and want to phase in any changes.

But don't get excited just yet students.

The team wants more time to receive community input before any changes are initiated.

School officials in Montgomery and Anne Arundel counties are also working to push back start times for students.
