Slain Teen Honored, Remembered by Stepfather, Boy Scouts

A Germantown, Maryland, teenager was laid to rest Saturday after he and a friend were shot and killed while sitting in their car on the eve of their graduation in June.

Artem Ziberov, 18, and Adi Najjar, 17, were killed on June 5. Their bodies were found inside a car in Montgomery Village.

Ziberov’s funeral was held on Saturday, and the Eagle Scout’s coffin was carried by fellow Boy Scouts.

William Tewelow, Ziberov’s stepfather, spoke about his loss, his fears and the memories he carries for his stepson.

“He was a beloved son. Before I knew how beloved he was to the rest of the community, he was a very loved son at home,” Tewelow said.

He said he only has good memories and no regrets about his last moments with Ziberov, who paused to say good night to him before going out on the evening he was killed.

“You can never tell your children that you love them enough. You can never tell them that you’re proud of them enough….He knows that I was proud of him and that I love him,” Tewelow said.

Police are still investigating the fatal shooting. Audio recorded on the night of the shooting by a neighbor indicated at least 22 shots were fired during the slaying.

Family members have set up GoFundMe pages to help pay for funeral expenses for the teens. Click here for the page that benefits both Ziberov and Najjar's families. Ziberov's family has an additional GoFundMe page here.
