Sinkhole On D.C. 295 South Ties Up Traffic

Steel plates placed on roadway

There's a bit of a traffic mess for drivers heading into D.C. by way of D.C. route 295. Work crews had to scramble shortly after 4 a.m. to deal with a huge sinkhole on the 295 deck over South Capitol Street near Malcom X Boulevard.

All lanes were originally shut down after the sinkhole was discovered, and crews had to place a steel patch on the damaged portion of the overpass so traffic could get by in at least in one of the lanes.

Crews are hoping to fully assess the damage and begin more permanent repairs once the morning rush hour is over. At this point, South Capitol Street is open in both directions. One lane on southbound 295 is still closed, so traffic will be a bit slow if you head in this direction.
