Silver Spring Man, 72, Brutally Beaten Near Home

Victim’s family says he was robbed while walking to a store

A 72-year-old Silver Spring man was in critical condition Wednesday after being brutally beaten near his home.

Candelario Guevara-Guzman's sons found him unconscious about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday in a parking lot of an apartment complex on Garland Avenue near Piney Branch Road.

The sons told police they last saw their father about five hours earlier when he left to walk to a nearby store.

Police handed out fliers Wednesday afternoon in Guevara-Guzman's neighborhood. They hope someone who may know something about the beating will come forward.

Guevara-Guzman's daughter made a plea to the public.

“There is no human being that deserves to be treated like that”, said Elsy Ventura. “(He’s) a man who walks every single day in the morning and in the evening to go to work and to the grocery story -- if anybody knows anything, come forward.”

Guevara-Guzman's daughter believes her father's attackers were after money.

Police said Guevara-Guzman cannot talk right now because of his injuries.
