D.C. Council Considering Sidewalk Shoveling

Tougher penalties considered for not shoveling

The D.C. Council is considering a law requiring property owners to clear adjacent public sidewalks of snow within eight daylight hours after a snowfall has stopped.

The old law requires offenders to go to court. The new law would fine homeowners $25 and businesses $125 per occurence.

The bill had its first reading Wednesday.

It still needs to go through the amendment process, and more changes could be made before it is signed into law.

Any changes likely will be made after this winter.
