University of Maryland Issues Shelter-in-Place Order After Armed Robbery

University of Maryland police ordered students and staff to shelter in place for nearly two hours Thursday afternoon as officers searched for at least one armed robbery suspect near the school's campus. 

Campus police told students an armed robbery was reported on the 8800 block of 36th Avenue in College Park, north of campus. Armed men forced their way into a home and robbed two men inside. 

Warnings sent campus-wide told students at about 1 p.m. to shelter in place if they were close to the area. 

Prince George's County police used a helicopter and a K-9 unit to search for a man armed with a handgun. 

County police said about 2:05 p.m. that they had two suspects in custody. One victim has minor injuries, police said. 

Campus police lifted the shelter-in-place order about 2:55 p.m.

Police believe the victims were targeted and that the crime was not random. 

Officers will maintain a presence on campus. 

The investigation is ongoing.
