STAFFORD, Va. -- A decade ago Stafford County was booming, but now elementary and middle schools may have to close or consolidate.
Last year, enrollment dropped in the Stafford County school system. Despite a small increase this year, Drew and Stafford middle schools face possible closure. Grafton Village, Falmouth and Ferry Farm elementary schools face possible consolidation, while Moncure and Stafford elementary schools could close.
The school system also is being asked to cut almost $2 million from this year's budget.
Parents at a public hearing this week were opposed to the closures or consolidation.
The school board plans to make a decision at its Oct. 28 meeting.
