School Bus Drivers Scared of Northwestern High Routes

Prince George’s County school bus driver attacked by students

HYATTSVILLE, Md. -- Three students attacked a Prince George’s County school bus driver at Northwestern High School Tuesday.

Peter Huggins was attacked when he wouldn’t let one of the students off the bus while it was moving, the driver said.

“Grabbed the door handle to open the door, closed it back, and then he rushed me and a few others come from the back and started punching me in my face and my head,” Huggins said.

He is the second Northwestern bus driver attacked this school year.

County school bus drivers upset by the attacks met at the bus yard in Greenbelt Wednesday afternoon. They said Northwestern routes are scary and sometimes they are afraid of driving students home.

“Because they’re behind our backs,” said bus driver Barbara Chinn. “So we don’t know what’s going on behind us. You’ve got 52 kids sitting behind us.”

No suspect was identified in a September school bus assault, but two of the students in Tuesday’s assault are being disciplined.

“When they came to school this morning, they were identified, questioned and ultimately sent home with their parents,” said schools spokesman John White.

The third student was identified later. All three face the possibility of suspension, expulsion and criminal charges.
