Edward Crayle was described as a good man with a great sense of humor. Playing Santa at the Deale Volunteer Fire Station at Century 21 in Deale for more than 10 years, Crayle also apparently had a big heart, according to Hometown Annapolis.com.
It was Crayle's giving nature that caused him to go swap vehicles with his wife on Tuesday. Linda Crayle called her husband just before 6:45 p.m. because she didn't feel safe driving her Chevrolet Lumina, saying the steering wheel had been locking up.
Her husband came to pick up the vehicle, telling his wife to drive his car to a local convenience store in Edgewater, where the two would meet up and leave the Lumina in the parking lot overnight.
But Edward Crayle never made it to the store.
Police said Crayle was driving in the 5500 block of Old Pike Road when he went through a red light at an intersection and was struck on the driver's side by a pickup truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It's unclear what caused Crayle to cross into the intersection.
The driver of the pickup, Karen Cleek, 47, of Churchton, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Crayle worked for Verizon phone company for more than 30 years. He began selling real estate for Century 21 in Deale after he retired from the phone company.
