Safeway Worker Hurls Mangoes in Attempt to Stop Tide Thief

A Montgomery County Safeway employee armed himself with fruit to try to stop a man from stealing a cartload of Tide laundry detergent pods.

The thief filled a cart with Tide and tried to leave the Safeway on Randolph Road in Rockville, Maryland, without paying, but an employee intervened, throwing mangoes at the man.

The thief pulled a knife and shouted for the employee to leave him alone as he fled.

“It’s almost like currency on the street,” said Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks. “They can sell it on the street corner, different shops sometimes, pawn stores, that sort of thing.”

And there’s no way to trace the detergent.

Police also are looking for a man who stole about $100 in Tide from the Giant in the 2900 block of University Boulevard West in Wheaton. When confronted by the manager, he pulled out a large knife, police said.

“These suspects involved may be desperate because they may be using the proceeds to buy drugs,” Starks said.
