Victims struck, killed while carrying groceries

LARGO, Md. -- A male teenager and a boy died after the driver of a sport utility vehicle struck the two while they were pushing a grocery cart across Central Avenue in Prince George's County, according to Maryland State Police.

Larenta McFarland, 19, of Cheverly, and 7-year-old Richard Young, of Largo, were struck about 9 p.m. Sunday on Central Avenue near Campus Way in Largo, Sgt. Arthur Betts said. The two were among five people crossing the street..

McFarland died at the scene. Young died shortly after midnight Monday at Children's National Hospital in Washington.

Officials are still trying to determine whether the victims were in a crosswalk when they were hit and whether the driver will face charges, Betts said.
