Rock Creek Parkway to Partially Close This Weekend

Anyone walking, biking or driving along Rock Creek Parkway near the Kennedy Center this weekend may need to make alternative plans. The road will close Friday and 8 p.m. and won't reopen until Monday at 5:30 a.m. News4's Nicole Jacobs reports. (Published Friday, April 19, 2019)

Drivers, bicyclists and runners take note: Part of Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway near the Kennedy Center will close Friday night and won't reopen until early Monday.

A stretch of the roadway between Virginia Avenue Northwest and the Interstate 66/Potomac River Freeway interchange closes Friday at 8 p.m. and is set to reopen Monday at 5:30 a.m.

Vehicles coming from the south will be rerouted to Virginia Avenue Northwest.

Vehicles coming from the north will be redirected onto the ramp that leads to I-66.

During that same timeframe, the Rock Creek trail is set to close between F Street Northwest at the Kennedy Center and the Roosevelt Bridge. If you're walking or biking, detour signs will direct you to Virginia Avenue Northwest and 23rd Street.

If you're traveling in the area of the Kennedy Center or Foggy Bottom this weekend, give yourself extra time. Anyone with tickets to a performance should budget extra time and check their emails for more information, The Kennedy Center says.

Crews are preparing to bring in equipment for a new pedestrian bridge over Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway. The Kennedy Center says the bridge will open in September and allow pedestrian access between the National Mall, the Kennedy Center and the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge.

Correction (Friday, April 19, 2019 at 9:50 a.m.):An earlier version of this article misstated the time the road would reopen.
