Riders Council To Hold Forum On Metro Bag Searches

Random bag searches are the topic of discussion tonight at a forum for Metro riders.

With little prior announcement, Metro announced last month that it would begin mandatory, random inspections of its riders' bags in train stations.

Some civil libertarians say these searches violate the 4th amendment prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizures. But Metro says New York and Boston have successfully implemented - and defeated court challenges to - their own bag search programs.

Tonight at 6:30, Metro's Riders Advisory Council will hold a forum on the bag searches at Metro's downtown D.C. headquarters. The council wants to hear riders' experiences and opinions, citing "great public concern" about the new program.
