Search for Boy in River Turns to Recovery

Child slipped while fishing

The D.C. Fire and Rescue Department's search for an 11-year-old boy who slipped into the Potomac River while fishing with his father has turned into a recovery mission.

The accident happened Sunday before 5 p.m.

A father and son were sitting on rocks fishing when the boy fell into the dangerous river near the Chain Bridge, D.C. fire department spokesman Ken Crosswhite said.

The father jumped in to rescue his son, but a bystander had to save him from the water.  He received treatment along the shore lines.

Another man jumped into the water to rescue the young boy.  He disappeared for a short time, but has since been found.

Crews continued searching for the boy throughout the night, Crosswhite said.

Injured Man Rescued By Boat

Montgomery County fire and U.S. Park police said an injured man was swept down the Potomac River and rescuers carried him to safety on a boat.

Rescuers were dispatched to the Pennyfield Lock area on the river around 7:40 p.m. Sunday, where they spotted the man after he swam to an island.

A U.S. Park police paramedic jumped about five feet from a helicopter hovering above the island. The paramedic treated the man and stayed with him until the county fire boat arrived and carried the man and the paramedic to Pennyfield Lock.

Police said the man refused further treatment and transport to hospital for his leg injury.

Police said the rescue was not related to the search for the boy south of Chain Bridge.
