District of Columba officials are set to release a report on use of force by city police in the seven years since federal oversight of the department ended.
Washington's police department agreed voluntarily to Justice Department oversight in 2001 after it was labeled the deadliest big-city police force in the nation. The oversight led to a number of reforms and ended in 2008.
The D.C. Auditor's office has analyzed whether those reforms are still having their desired effect, and its report will be released on Thursday. It comes amid much closer national scrutiny of police-involved shooting, especially those involving unarmed black males.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Wednesday that the report is generally positive and shows that the District is still following best practices surrounding use of force.
