Region Drenched By Sunday Rain

Over half-an-inch could fall through Monday night

An early-arriving rainstorm had D.C. residents searching for their umbrellas and ponchos Sunday.

Forecasts from earlier this week called for showers to hold off until late Sunday afternoon and early Sunday evening, but the first drops of rain began to fall in Northwest D.C. at around 11:30 a.m.

Areas with the heaviest rain could see between half-an-inch and one inch of rain though Sunday and Monday night. The weather is expected to clear on Tuesday.

The rain delayed the Washington Nationals' scheduled game against the New York Mets for over two hours. Originially scheduled to start at 1:35 p.m., the rubber game of the series finally began at 4 p.m. . D.C. United's Major League Soccer match against the Philadelphia Union is expected to begin as scheduled at 5 p.m.

In addition, Reagan National Airport was experiencing gate hold and taxi delays lasting between 30 and 45 minutes Sunday afternoon due to the weather.
