Redskins Fall to Jets, 34-20

The Washington Redskins couldn’t overcome multiple turnovers, a struggling rushing attack and a defensive letdown in the third quarter, losing to the New York Jets 34-20.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins threw for 196 yards and a touchdown but also threw two interceptions. The Redskins rushing attack could only manage 34 yards on the ground.

Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick finished with 253 yards, threw for 2 touchdowns and rushed one in himself. Running back Chris Ivory had 146 yards on 20 carries.

The Jets scored 17 points in the third quarter to blow open what had previously been a tightly contested game. Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland recovered two fumbles and picked off a pass, but it wasn’t enough.

The Redskins fall to 2-4 overall and still haven’t won a game away from Washington. They’ll return home next week to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Three and out after the Redskins received the opening kickoff. However, the first play by the Jets offense is fumbled away, recovered by Bashaud Breeland in Jets’ territory.

Cousins took advantage of the turnover, moving the team 37 yards in 7 plays before tossing a short pass to Pierre Garcon for a touchdown. Alfred Morris carried the ball four times and caught a pass in the drive.

That touchdown pass was Cousins’ sixth straight game with a TD pass, the first time in his career.

The Jets responded, moving 83 yards in 10 plays before Chris Ivory plunged in from 2 yards out to tie up the game at 7-7. A 35 yard reception by Eric Decker, who previously fumbled the ball, helped set up the score.

The Redskins looked like they were ready to respond with some touch passes from Cousins. Two missed connections, including one that injured running back Chris Thompson, stalled the drive, forcing a punt.

Tress Way was able to pin the Jets inside the 10 with 30 seconds to go in the first quarter.

After a huge scramble by Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to start the second quarter, Ivory ripped off a 54 yard run, diving up the middle before racing down the sideline to put the Jets offense deep in Redskins territory.

However, the defense tightened up and forced kicker Nick Folk to boot a 35 yard field goal to give the Jets the lead, 10-7.

An incomplete pass, a sack and a short screen pass put the Redskins into a three and out situation for the second time in the game.

The Redskins defense forced the Jets to also go three and out after managing only three yards. Washington dodged a potential problem when the Jets punter was run into during the kick, but the penalty yardage wouldn’t have given New York a first down.

Another strong showing by the Jets defense forced the Redskins to punt from deep in their own territory.

But for the second time, the Jets’ first play from scrimmage resulted in a turnover. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall caught a pass and was fighting for extra yards when he was stripped by Breeland of the ball. Washington’s offense was able to start around mid-field.

However, the offense struggled once again, only managing 19 yards on seven plays. Their good starting field position put kicker Dustin Hopkins in a position to drill a 54 yard field goal to tie up the score at 10-10.

With just over 2 minutes to go in the half, the Jets moved quickly in the Redskins territory. Breeland decided to take charge again, intercepting his second pass of the game with 36 seconds to go in the half.

Three passes and a short run put the Redskins back into position for another Hopkins field goal. He drilled the short kick to give Washington a 13-10 lead at the half.

The Jets took the second half kickoff and put their offense on the back of Ivory, with multiple touches in the running and passing game, moving the team down to the 20 yard line. They had to settle for a 28 yard field goal from Hopkins to tie up the game, 13-13.

Cousins threw an interception on the second play of their drive, giving the ball back to the Jets on the 18 yard line. On the next play, Fitzpatrick dropped back to pass, pulled it down, and took off for the end zone, giving the Jets a 20-13 lead.

The Redskins offense, which has had troubles scoring in the third quarter this season, couldn’t get started in the next drive, going three and out for the third time in the game.

The Jets offense was humming in the second half, scoring on their next drive in a six play, 76 yard march down the field. The drive culminated in a 35-yard touchdown pass to Marshall, who made a great adjustment to the ball and gave the Jets a 14 point lead.

After struggling to gain yards, Cousins attempted to go deep down field and was picked off for the second time today. The Jets got the ball back on their own 27.

After the interception, the Jets offense took less than 4 minutes to go 73 yards. Fitzpatrick threw a short strike to Decker and gave New York a 21 point lead to start the fourth quarter.

Cousins tried again to take some strikes down the field, but overthrows and a drop put the Redskins into a punt situation again after another three and out. A 25 yard return and the Jets were back in business near midfield.

The Jets started grinding it out on the ground between Ivory and Zac Stacy, trying to wear down a demoralized Redskins defense. But they stalled, and Folk’s 49 yard field goal attempt fell a couple yards short.

After going about 50 minutes in the game without a penalty, two quick ones – one on each team – helped keep the drive alive. The offense started going back to the short passing game as the defense dropped deeper to prevent a quick score.

However, two incomplete passes and a delay of game set up a fourth and seven. Cousins was able to find Crowder for 18 yards to pick up a first down and extend the drive.

Working quickly, a screen pass to Thompson got the Redskins inside the 10. But four plays later and the offense couldn’t push the ball into the end zone, giving it back to the Jets on downs with about 5 ½ minutes to go.

The Jets were content to just run the ball for three short gains and try to punt the ball away. However, Jeron Johnson blocked the kick in the end zone and it was recovered by Rashad Ross for the touchdown. The Redskins were still down 14 with about four minutes to go.

The Jets were able to run the remaining time out and pull out the win.
