Redskins Fall to Dolphins, 17-10

The Washington Redskins opened up the 2015 season with a new quarterback under center, but they still couldn’t generate enough offense in the second half to sustain their early lead, losing to the Miami Dolphins, 17-10.

Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins finished with 195 yards and a touchdown but threw two interceptions and couldn't get the team any points in the second half after leading them to a 10-7 lead at halftime.

Running back Alfred Morris topped 100 yards, rushing for 107. Rookie Matt Jones also rushed for 28 yards.

Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw for 224 yards and a touchdown.

Cousins took the team down after the opening kickoff, picking up first downs and leading to an early field goal and a 3-0 lead.

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson injured his hamstring in the first quarter, trying to catch up with a Cousins’ pass, and did not return. Coach Jay Gruden said after the game that Jackson would receive an MRI and didn't have a timetable for the return.

Safety Duke Ihenacho injured his wrist early in the second quarter, and he was out for the rest of the game. Gruden said Ihenacho suffered a wrist fracture and dislocation.

There was a scary moment in the second quarter as Miami’s tight end Dion Sims slammed his head on the turf while diving for a pass from quarterback Ryan Tannehill. After several moments, Sims was able to get to his feet and sit in a cart that took him from the field.

A Cousins’ interception was not costly as the Redskins defense made a solid stop on 4th and 1 deep in their own territory to prevent a Dolphins score.

After getting the ball back, the Redskins offense moved the ball down the field with strong running and timely passing. Seventeen plays later, Cousins hooked up with tight end Jordan Reed for a 4 yard touchdown, extending the team’s lead to 10-0.

Right before the end of the first half, Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall injured his ribs while making a tackle. He returned in the third quarter.

With less than 30 seconds to go in the first half, Tannehill toss a short pass to receiver Jordan Cameron, cutting the lead to 10-7.
The Redskins defense opened up the second half by forcing a fumble, but the offense was forced to punt.

Neither team could really move the ball in the third quarter with three consecutive penalties stalling and pushing the Redskins out of scoring range.

In the fourth quarter, the Dolphins chewed up more than four minutes but could only manage a field goal to tie it up at 10.

Later in the quarter, returner Jarvis Landry returned a Redskins punt 69 yards for a touchdown, giving the Dolphins their first lead of the game.

The Redskins responded with a good drive, but a fantastic play by cornerback Brice McCain picked off a Cousins pass, killing the drive.

A defensive stop by the Redskins gave the offense another chance with five minutes to go in the game. Cousins lead the team down to the 20 but couldn’t complete a pass on fourth down to sustain the drive.
