Officials: Illegal Fireworks Led to Red Line Service Shutdown

Metro service between two Red Line stations was shut down Sunday night after operators likely mistook smoke from illegal fireworks for a track problem, officials say.

Service was shut down between the Silver Spring and Forest Glen stations because of fire department activity at Silver Spring, Metro said.

The Montgomery County fire department responded to a report of a smoking cable on the tracks.

But they found no smoke or fire in the station when they arrived.

Instead, they found people using illegal fireworks near the station, on the 8500 block of 16th Street, a spokesman said.

Trains were running on a single track, with delays, as of 7:45 p.m., Metro said.
