Red Cross Center to Link Families in Pacific

The American Red Cross is opening a call center in the national capital region to accept inquiries about missing people in the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the area.

The Red Cross says its call center is operating Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Inquiries about family members in the Philippines can be directed to 703-584-8761.

Inquiries about U.S. citizens in the affected area should be directed to the U.S. State Department at 1-888-407-4747.

Typhoon Haiyan struck six central Philippine islands on Friday. It is the strongest typhoon of the year and one of the strongest storms on record.

It also appears to be the deadliest storm and natural disaster on record to hit the Philippines. Officials say as many as 10,000 people are believed dead.
