DUMFRIES, Va. -- A couple found dead in their Virginia home may be the latest fatal victims of the economy.
Wallis Ray Fay, 52, and his wife, Julie Kay Fay, 57, died in a homicide-suicide, police said. Apparently, the Dumfries couple was in desperate financial straits.
The Fays had fallen on hard times and were soon to be evicted from their home in the Williamstown neighborhood, News4's Pat Collins reported. They were found dead in that home Thursday night.
Neighbors became concerned Wednesday when the Fays' trash cans uncharacteristically remained in front of the house after trash collection, Collins reported. With the trash cans still in front of the house Thursday, neighbors called police to check on the couple.
The Fays told friends they were planning to pack their things and move to Colorado, Collins reported.
The Fays were upset about leaving the house, according to Uriah Kiser, a reporter with the Prince William County News & Messenger who interviewed the couple last week.
"They were distraught," Kiser said. "They were getting their items together, packing boxes. But you could really tell that the last thing they wanted to do was leave their home of more than 13 years."
