A Prince George’s County police officer was arrested Wednesday after she was caught talking on her cellphone while driving, Maryland State Police said.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m., a state trooper stopped Alita Gaskill, 50, after seeing her talking on her phone while behind the wheel in Oxon Hill, police said. Before the trooper could exit his cruiser, Gaskill exited her own and began to approach him.
The trooper got out of his patrol vehicle and told the woman to stop and return to her car, police said. Gaskill refused and identified herself as an officer with the Prince George’s County Police Department but didn’t provide identification. She was placed in handcuffs.
Several Prince George’s County officers arrived to the scene, and Gaskill eventually was identified by her police ID card, police said.
Gaskill was cited for failure to obey a lawful order and resisting arrest. She was released on her personal recognizance.
