Prince George's School Board Considers No Talk, No Text Proposal

If passed, new rule could be one of the strictest in the region

The days of texting during class or calling mom during lunchtime could come to an end for students in Prince George's County.

School board members are considering a proposal to ban cell phones while classes are in session. It calls for students to leave their phones turned off and in their lockers all day. They’d be able to use their cell phones only with the principal’s permission or for an educational purpose.

Teachers call the phones a distraction after catching teens texting during class. Some students have used their camera phones to record videos of fights in the hallway.

School board members were scheduled to vote on the measure Thursday but tabled it in order to get more input from the teacher’s union.
