Prince George's County Leaders Oppose Redskins Name

A diverse group of Prince George’s County leaders spoke out Monday urging people to stop using the Washington Redskins name.

Their rally in the shadows of the stadium Monday was anything but a pep rally for the team ahead Monday night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Those who want the team to change its name argue the word used to mean something else.

“It meant the bounty on a redskin that was brought in for money,” said Susan Marcus of the Society of American Indian government employees.

Monday’s multi-ethnic group of leaders asked for the residents of the county where the team plays to unite against the name.

“If we continue to put racial terms on peoples only because of their skin color or place of origin, we've lost,” radio personality Jay Winter NightWolf said.
