Prince George's County Council members are hoping for a way to create a disposable bag tax like the ones in the District and Montgomery County.
Councilwoman Mary Lehman told The Washington Examiner that the tax on disposable paper and plastic bags http://bit.ly/t32Lou could cut down on the county's environmental cleanup costs. She says the county spends more than $2.5 million a year on litter pickup.
State Sen. Paul Pinsky and Delegate Barbara Frush, both Democrats, are planning to introduce legislation in January that would allow county officials to set the tax. Prince George's County requires permission from the General Assembly to implement new taxes.
Details of the bag tax would be left up to the county council.
