Authorities Call Asylum Remains a Hoax

Discovery of possible human remains reported Tuesday night

The report of possible remains were found Tuesday night by someone trespassing on the grounds of the Forest Haven Facility, a former asylum for mentally challenged adults in Anne Arundel County, was a hoax, according to authorities.

A person called police, who investigated the find.

Whatever was found has been there for a long time, police had said.

The facility has been closed since 1991. It was run by District.

The history of Forest Haven was a sad and sometimes frightening one. The Washington Post did numerous stories on the facility, none of which sum up the situation inside better than this:

The 91 people who remain at Forest Haven, a District-run home for the mentally retarded, often choke on their food because there is no one around to make sure they eat properly, attorneys for those patients told a federal judge yesterday.

The attorneys told U.S. District Judge John H. Pratt that even though the District is moving residents out of Forest Haven with the goal of closing the facility - which it was ordered to do 12 years ago - it needs to spend at least $395,000 to make sure the patients still there live to be transferred.
