Va. Lawmakers Pull Out of Porn-for-Roads Plan

Delegates OK hotel pay-per-view tax

RICHMOND, Va. -- The porn industry was this close to helping build Virginia roads.

If Gov. Tim Kaine signs legislation passed Wednesday, a 10 percent tax will be imposed on pay-per-view movies purchased in hotel rooms.

An amendment to the bill proposed by Delegate John Cosgrove would have had the money collected used for transportation, but the amendment failed on a voice vote.

Delegate Bob Marshall said that if the amendment passed, it would have been akin to "relying on the porn industry to build roads in Virginia" because so many hotel pay-per-view movies are adult features.

The House of Delegates voted 69-27 Wednesday to pass the bill without the amendment and, if signed by the governor, the tax revenue will instead be evenly divided between the general fund and a pool of money that provides incentives for filmmakers to shoot movies in Virginia.

As we all know, Virginia is for lovers, so we can only imagine what those movies would be like ...
