Popeyes Employee Indicted in Murder of Coworker

A Popeyes employee has been indicted in the murder of a coworker at a Popeyes restaurant in Brooklyn Park, Maryland, that occurred last month, according to the state attorney.

On Aug. 31, a manager found the victim suffering from traumatic injuries in the back of the restaurant, police said.

Luzviminda Monreal-Benny, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested Moises Gomez-Castillo, 26, who had worked for Popeyes on and off for about seven years, after discovering he had planned a robbery of the restaurant.

Gomez-Castillo is charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and theft.

Monreal-Benny, a 25-year employee of the fast food chain, had worked her way up to night manager and was known to water the tomato plants in front of the restaurant and the neighboring Pizza Hut.

One theory is that the victim caught Gomez-Castillo robbing the restaurant, police said. Authorities described the crime scene as "gruesome," over a matter of "dollars."

"We don't know what purpose he needed a sum of money for," said a police spokesperson.

Gomez-Castillo remains in custody at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center without bond.
