Officer Disappears During Diving Exercise

A Fairfax County Police Department officer disappeared Tuesday afternoon during an exercise at Pohick Bay Regional Park along the Potomac River.

The helicopter training mission involved the police dive team, and one officer that went in the water never resurfaced, police said.

The officer is a 42-year-old man and a 19-year veteran of the Fairfax Police Department. He was role playing during the training exercise just before he disappeared.

The missing man was not wearing any underwater apparatus at the time.

All available resources are searching for the officer, including helicopters, K-9 units and divers with support from other jurisdictions in the area and the FBI.
