Police shot and wounded a man in Woodbridge Thursday morning after he advanced toward officers with a knife, ignoring commands to stop, authorities say.
The 54-year-old Woodbridge man, who police did not immediately name, is seriously hurt, Prince William County police said.
Police received a domestic-related call to the 4300 block of Flooden Court. A woman said she and her husband were arguing and that he was armed with a screwdriver.
Two officers went to the subdivision at about 6:10 a.m. and found the woman on the front lawn. She said her husband had a BB gun and a knife, in addition to the screwdriver. As officers talked with the woman, the man approached the front door. Officers issued commands, but he "advanced towards the officers with the knife," a statement from police says.
Both officers shot at the suspect. He was hit in the upper body, and the officers treated him until medics arrived. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
No officers were hurt. The woman, and young children who were home at the time, also were not hurt.
The officers, who the department did not name, will be placed on routine, paid leave. An investigation is underway.

Domestic violence calls can be especially dangerous for police. Just three miles from the scene of the incident Thursday, a Prince William County officer was shot and killed responding to a domestic violence call in February 2016. It was Officer Ashley Guindon's first day on the job when a man who had just killed his wife opened fire on officers who were trying to help the victim.
