A police officer shot and killed a liquor store homicide suspect in Prince George's County Wednesday afternoon.
An officer who heard gunfire and rushed toward the scene confronted the suspect as he ran from the store at the corner of Livingston Road and Oxon Hill Road about 1:15 p.m. in a commercial area of Oxon Hill, Maryland, police said.
As the suspect ran toward the officer, the officer shouted commands to drop the gun, then fatally shot the suspect, police said.
"At this point, we know the suspect, fired several times, and we have several shell casings from that weapon," Prince George's County Police Chief Henry Stawinski said. "We also recovered that weapon on the body of our suspect."
The victim in the liquor store slaying was not an employee. Witnesses said the victim and suspect were involved in an argument. It's unclear if they knew each other.
"We are not clear, at this point, what precipitated the confrontation between our murder victim and our suspect, but we have more than two dozen witnesses to this, and in addition, we have video from some of the businesses in the proximity to this event," Stawinski said.
The gunman is known to police.
The officer was placed on administrative leave per department protocol.
The investigation created traffic problems in the area for hours.
