Police-Involved Shooting Leaves Man Dead

Family members say man killed was mentally ill

Prince George’s County police are investigating a police-involved shooting that left a man dead.

Family members say the man had a history of mental illness and suffered from bi-polar disorder.

Officers were called to the home on Andean Goose Way in Upper Marlboro Saturday afternoon for reports of a man acting erratically and using a shotgun to fire several shots in the home. Lt. Tammy Sparkman with the Prince George’s County Police Department told NBC Washington officers tried to take the man to the hospital but the man ran off.

According to Lt. Sparkman, officers tried using less-lethal weapons to stop the man. He then reached for an officer’s gun. That’s when investigators said that officer fired at the man, striking him.

Rescuers took the man to the hospital where he died. Police have not released the name of the man who died or the names of the officers involved.
