Police in Prince William County are investigating a social media threat against schools in Prince William County and Manassas, Virginia.

A student at Stonewall Middle School has been identified in the investigation and police say the threat is not credible.

The threat appeared in an anonymous post on Instagram and was flagged for police Friday night, police said. The Instagram account has been shut down as part of the investigation, police said.

The threat identified six schools in the Manassas area — Ellis Elementary, Loch Lomond Elementary, Sinclair Elementary, Stonewall Middle, Sudley Elementary and West Gate Elementary — and two schools in the City of Manassas.

No specific date was mentioned in the online threat, but additional police patrols will be posted at the schools, police said.

Manassas City Police ask for anyone with additional information to call 703-257-8000 and urge parents to monitor their children's internet activity.
