Police Install Software for Deaf Community

15 cruisers outfitted with video links that interpret sign language

D.C.’s deaf community will soon see new safety software designed to help police in their community.

The D.C. Police Department is putting software in 15 cruisers this week to provide a video link that allows people to communicate with interpreters in sign language, the Associated Press reported. The translation is then relayed to patrol officers.

Police said it’s an important tool to let them collect information from the scene faster.

The software for the deaf and hard of hearing is already in all seven District stations.
