Police: Infant's Body Found in Lake

Two men were fishing at Lake Artemesia in Berwyn Heights Sunday when they made the horrible discovery -- a dead newborn girl in a plastic bag floating near the shoreline.

The girl was a full-term infant, white or Hispanic, with the umbilical cord still attached, sources said.

It isn't clear how the baby died.  There were no obvious signs of trauma to her tiny body, police said.

The park was packed with joggers, walkers and people on bikes who were enjoying a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Some were asked to leave and others turned away as police closed the park during this suspicious death investigation.

Police want to remind parents that in Maryland Safe Haven Law, which states a mother can leave her child in the care of an adult at any police station, hospital or fire department within 72 hours of birth with no questions asked.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (301) 772-4925 or Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
