Police Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing in DC

A Prince George's County police helicopter has made an emergency landing in southeast Washington after a mechanical light warned of trouble.

D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said rescuers evaluated two police officers who were on board. He said the Maryland helicopter was able to land softly Thursday with no injuries and no fire.

It landed shortly before 6 p.m. on a football field at 46th and F streets, Southeast. Rescuers responded with fire trucks that turned out to be unnecessary.

Officials planned to have the helicopter land at Davis Elementary's school yard in southeast Washington. The school was evacuated as a precaution shortly before the landing, in case the helicopter crashed.

The helicopter didn't make it to the landing site but touched down in the field nearby.
