Pings Pinpoint Kayakers in Need of Rescue

Cell phone pings helped rescuers locate two kayakers stuck on the Patuxent River near Bowie, Maryland, on Saturday.

Prince George’s County police said a man and woman were kayaking on the river when the woman’s boat overturned. She was able to get upright, but both boats became stuck when they lodged in some debris.

Police said the man called 9-1-1, but couldn’t tell authorities where they were. Rescuers got in touch with the victims’ cell phone company and used pings to locate them.

Both were rescued and were unharmed.
