A man in a wheelchair was seriously injured in Southeast D.C. after a gruesome hit-and-run, DC Fire and EMS said.

The man was crossing the road on his nightly route toward a nearby homeless shelter when he was hit, a friend told News4. The impact threw him out of the chair and onto the ground.

Police and fire officials responded to the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Mellon Street Southeast about 5 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the driver had fled the scene.

The crash victim was in serious condition, police said. A helicopter airlifted the victim to a hospital, police said.

Police closed one lane of the street as they investigated the crash. No further details have been released on the victim or the car suspected in the crash.
