A 16-year-old boy was stabbed near his high school on Tuesday in what Prince George's County police are calling a gang-related crime.

The teen was attacked in a wooded area close to Parkdale High School, prompting a temporary lockdown of the school on Good Luck Road in Riverdale.

Officers arrived and saw the victim staggering out of the woods.

The teen was rushed to a hospital with severe injuries to the abdomen, sources close to the investigation said. Information on his condition was not available immediately.

Police were able to respond quickly, because school officials called with a complaint about a large group of people near the school, police Chief Hank Stawinski said.

"Between the information we received from the school and our response, we believe we were able to prevent this from becoming worse," he said.

The school was locked down, and parents rushed to pick up their kids. One parent said this marks the second recent lockdown at the school.

The lockdown order was lifted later in the afternoon.

Half a dozen people are being questioned by police, Stawinski said.

"We believe suspects in this case are gang-affiliated," a statement from the police department said.
