A pedestrian was struck and seriously injured by a Ride On bus early Tuesday morning in Wheaton, Md.
The victim, a woman in her mid 30s, was transported to an area hospital. Authorities said she crossed the three eastbound lanes of Randolph Road safely and almost made it across the westbound lanes when the bus struck her near the curb.
The crash happened around 5:15 a.m. near the intersection with Middlevale Lane near John F. Kennedy High School. Signals would have been flashing: Yellow caution lights on Randolph Road traffic and flashing red on the cross traffic.
It's unknown whether the pedestrian lights were flashing. That will be part of the investigation, as will the bus itself. Authorities will review information from its data recorders and cameras.
The driver of the Ride On bus remained at the scene, but the two passengers on the bus did not. Police want to talk to them to learn what they saw.
"They did not remain. If they're hearing this report, we need to talk with them," said Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks.
The intersection and the westbound lanes of Randolph Road were closed throughout the morning.
This is the second time this year that a pedestrian has been struck by a Ride On bus in Montgomery County.
