Mother Charged in Overdose Death of 4-Year-Old Daughter in Maryland

Hampstead, Md., woman charged with murder in the death of her 4-year-old daughter, whom police say died of a drug overdose

A Hampstead, Md., woman has been charged with murder in the death of her 4-year-old daughter, whom police say died of a drug overdose.

Paula Shipley, 46, was arrested Friday, a day after her indictment on charges including second-degree murder in Carroll County.

Four-year-old Cassandra Shipley died March 21 after she was found in cardiac arrest at the home in Westminster where she was living with her parents.

Police and prosecutors have not specified how the drugs entered the girl's system. But authorities say Cassandra received "a lethal dose of various narcotic drugs" and also had taken over-the-counter drugs.

The state's attorney's office says Shipley has yet to retain a defense attorney. A bail review is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
