Passengers Stranded as Ferry Gets Stuck in Potomac River

Rescue boats called to scene

A commuter ferry is stuck in the middle of the Potomac River, stranding about 20 cars and their passengers.

White's Ferry's "Gen. Jubal Early" ferry, which offers transportation between Loudoun and Montgomery counties, got stuck on debris in the river.  The ferry is tethered by a guide cable, which was covered by branches and other debris.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue used boats to get the stranded commuters off the ferry, which got stuck just after 8 a.m.

After getting all of the passengers off the ferry by about 9:45 a.m., crews then worked on getting the cable free from the debris.  The ferry finally made it across the river at about 10:25 a.m.

White's Ferry is located just north of Leesburg on the Virginia side and about 6 miles west of Poolesville on the Maryland side.
