The passenger of a vehicle involved in a police chase that resulted in the death of a officer was sentenced to time served Friday for stealing the car used in the pursuit.
Prince George's County Police officers Adrian Morris and Michael Risher were pursuing a silver Acura when their cruiser ran off Interstate 95 near the Powder Mill Road exit in August 2012. Morris died after being ejected from the vehicle. Police said Morris was not wearing a seat belt.
Kenneth Clark Mitchell, 25, of Northeast D.C. pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a motor vehicle Friday. Having served 14 months in Prince George's County, Angela Alsobrooks, the state's attorney for the county, said it's unclear whether Mitchell will be released immediately.
Mitchell has an outstanding warrant in Montgomery County and may be transferred to face those charges.
Prior to the chase, the officers were called to a Laurel gas station to investigate an attempted car break-in. Witnesses saw two people trying to open the doors of a customer's car at a Shell station on Sandy Spring Road
The driver of the car, Kevon Darnell Neal, 23, of the 3400 block of Gennene Lane in Fort Washington, Md., will go on trial for a manslaughter charge in January 2014.
