Partial Roof Collapse Traps Five Firefighters

Five Montgomery County firefighters suffered minor injuries when the roof of a burning home partially collapsed, trapping them inside.

Fire crews were called to the home in the Kentlands area of Gaithersburg just after 1 a.m. Thursday. When they arrived, they found flames shooting from the roof of the home.

Fire officials say the firefighters sent out a mayday when the wooden roof partially collapsed. The firefighters were able to get out of the home okay. They were taken to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The home's only occupant also escaped the fire safely.

Officials say a chimney fire started the blaze. The home suffered $800,000 in damages.
