Nearly 20 parking spaces in the District of Columbia will become temporary parks Friday.
For this year's PARK(ing) Day event, participants had to apply for a permit to build their temporary green space. Planner say the event allows the public to rethink how we use public space.
Businesses like Zipcar and DC Water will showcase their creativity by spreading out astroturf, lawn chairs and whatever else they can think of to enjoy the space.
The annual event was introduced in San Francisco in 2005, where the first mini-park was intact for two hours, the maximum allowed time on the meter.
The concept has since spread to cities across the globe, and has been held in D.C. since 2009.
The locations of the mini-parks include spots by the D.C. Council at 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW and by the bakery Baked & Wired in Georgetown.
