Park Police Officer Injured in Accident

A U.S. Park Police officer was flown to a hospital after being involved in an accident at about 11 a.m. Wednesday on I-395 near 7th Street behind L'Enfant Plaza.

The incident apparently started when a black Toyota became involved in an accident with two other vehicles on the Southeast-Southwest Freeway.  The driver got out of his car to exchange information with the other vehicles when the Park Police officer's motorcycle crashed into the back of the Toyota, which was in the inner lane near the jersey barrier.  The motorcycle then ricocheted into the back of a blue SUV and went airborne.

The officer was thrown to the pavement, and the motorcycle ended up near the jersey barrier.

The officer, who was wearing his motorcycle helmet at the time of the incident, was flown to a local hospital and was reportedly in serious condition.

One other person was taken from the highway on a stretcher.

I-395 northbound heading into the District starting at Exit 4 was shut down.  Traffic was moving slow in the other direction in several lanes. The road reopened before 3 p.m.

Police shut down the 14th Street Bridge to allow a medical helicopter to land.  The road reopened soon after, but traffic remained slow.
