Panda Pregnancy Watch Called Off

Mei Xiang was faking it

The National Zoo can stop planning the baby shower -- Mei Xiang is not pregnant.

The zoo confirmed late Tuesday that the giant panda did not have a butterstick in the oven, but was showing a false pregnancy the past couple of months. An ultrasound confirmed everything.

With the panda pregnancy watch out of the way, the panda exhibit at the zoo will open up again at 10 a.m. Wednesday. So feel free to stop by and cheer up Mei Xiang.

Oh, the zoo also did a little harvesting Tuesday, collecting semen from Tian Tian to freeze and store as part of a worldwide giant panda breeding program. As we all know, giant panda semen production peaks in April and May. And if you didn't know that, the zoo reminded us in its press release.

And if that doesn't work? Well, there's always adoption, right?
