PHOTOS: Union Station to Get Sunny Overhaul

Plans are underway to convert busy Union Station into a new urban space with more sunlight and open space.

A historic preservation plan for the redevelopment of the hundred-year-old station shows skylights, the removal of the Center Cafe Restaurant and much more.

"Thirty-five million people a year are already coming in that station. It will

double in the next two decades. We need to be ready for that," Richard H. Bradley, executive director of the DowntownDC BID said.

But one key to the $7 billion project is replacing The Hopscotch Bridge that connects H Street NE to North Capitol Street over the Amtrak tracks.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen on Wednesday urged the Bowser administration to speed up the bridge project.

Deputy Mayor Brian Kenner said the mayor's team understands the scope and importance of the Union Station project.

"We want to try to move this as quickly as we can," he said.
