Soccer-Crazy Potomac Nationals: No Belgian Beer Tonight

At least for one day, there is no place for Belgian beer at the Potomac Nationals stadium.

As the U.S. men's soccer team prepares to take the field against the Belgians in a win-or-go-home World Cup match tomorrow, the P-Nats have offered up a significant sacrifice.

Before Monday's game against the Frederick Keys, the P-Nats removed all Belgian beer from concession stands at Pfitzner Stadium, known as the Pfitz.

No Stella Artois. No Shock Top Belgian White.

And those were popular beers, P-Nats officials said.

Stella is "a really popular beer," said Bryan Holland, the P-Nats' media relations director and play-by-play broadcaster. "But tonight, no Stella."

Potomac Nationals Food and Beverage Director Aaron Johnson came up with the idea. A soccer fan, he wanted to show how much the P-Nats were standing with the U.S. men's team.

"If we sold Belgium waffles at The Pfitz, they too would be placed on the concessions inactive list," Johnson said.

(Waffle House has called for a boycott of Belgian waffles in support of the team -- though they never did sell Belgian waffles, so that's not nearly as impressive as the P-Nats.)

The team seems committed. In a press release announcing the change, the P-Nats said: "In the event the USMNT was to be defeated by Team Belgium tomorrow, it is not clear whether or not the Potomac Nationals will continue to carry Belgian beer at Pfitzner Stadium."
